I qualified as a Graphic Designer in 1997/8 and then enrolled onto a “9 Month Intensive Web and Internet Course” as an opportunity to learn more about computing and the fledgling Internet. When I completed this course, I was asked to teach and train the next cohort of students (6 out of 60 students were asked).
This was my first role in the Web/Internet industry. I held this position for the next 9 months when 6 of the new students were taken on for the role. I facilitated and trained part-time and my other time I was spent in the “Long Room” where there were an mixture of around 50 Web Designers, Developers and Programmers building websites for some of the giants.
My first websites were Liverpool Football Club and Telewest were I worked in a team of 4 updating my skills and being thrown in the deep end!
My second role was working with Photography and a programming language called Java where we created Spin Panoramas (before QuickTime) so that brands like PC World, Wedgwood and Argos allowed the users of their websites to have a 360 degree view of all of the products.
I started my third salaried job as a Junior Web Designer – eventually becoming the only girl on a team of 14, creating Insurance websites for brands like HSBC, Tesco, Churchill and Devitts. I went from Junior, to Web Designer and then to Internet Developer over 3 and a half years and then became the face for the Internet Team, liaising between blue chip clients, account managers and project managers.
The job was heading more towards programming but I desperately wanted to do more design work. I started Koogar as a hobby to keep my design skills up and learn more new marketing techniques and carried on working full time for 2 years. A friend of mine asked if I could design a website for his Father who has a Hotel in North Wales. He remains a client of Koogar’s to this day.
The number one question I’m asked still to this day is “Where did the name Koogar come from?“
At times, working in a male dominated industry has been tough but it’s made me the person I am today. There were very few women working in technical roles back then and we were treated differently to male colleagues. Since starting Koogar, I think there are many obstacles to overcome but the main one has been me! Sometimes you hold yourself back through lack of confidence in yourself, lack of confidence from others or being indecisive and overwhelmed which stops you from moving forward.
With the benefit of hindsight I would say “Go with your instincts! If it feels right – just do it!“
Running a successful business is an achievement in itself as is every satisfied customer. That’s why we’re in business after all. I’m not one for entering awards and I don’t keep records of landmark events. In 2012 we won the largest client in Koogar history and am very proud of myself for doing so.
All businesses go through tough times as well. The “awkward client“, the bad debtor or the rogue employee. Times when you wonder why you’re still doing what you do. It’s often the difficult things that teach us the most important lessons, so although I’ve made some big mistakes I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Whatever you do, keep the passion for what you love and go with your heart!
If you feel something isn’t right. Trust it and move on.
Getting the work / life balance right is difficult when you live and breathe your job. I love what I do and without it I wouldn’t be me but it’s also important to take a step back and remember why you do it. Running a company is the hardest thing I have EVER done. You have ups and downs and sometimes your friends and family just don’t get it. My Mom ran a number of her own businesses and I now know how she felt.
I asked for her advice a few times and she always replied… “Understand your customers and you have the key!”
In the years Koogar has been going I have never worked so hard but I love it! It may sound a little corny but, this is what I was made to do.
In the future I would like to teach the next generation of marketers in colleges, universities and businesses to understand the marketing as a whole and inspire them to be the best they can.
The Internet is a beast that can’t be tamed.
It changes every day and makes you want to throw your machine out of the window every now and again but when it works, digital and technology is a fantastic place to be.
