Whats your Purple Cow?

I have finished this remarkable book called “Purple Cow” by Seth Godin and I wanted to share it with you…

I first heard of it on Redshift Radio as one of the presenters who comes on once a month reviews books and he shared the story about the “Sneezer’s” which I now refer to all the time. I wanted to know more about this book so I preceded to visit my local library to see if they had it for loan , and they did.

It’s taken me a month to read the book I read it slowly to make sure I took in the books message and answered some of the questions he puts to you. The book is written by Seth Godin and you can find him on Facebook and many other places. his website is: http://www.sethgodin.com/sg/

I have taken a few things from this book.

  1. Be Remarkable!
  2. Otaku
  3. Risk
  4. Sneezers

Be remarkable; is the books theme. It wants you to take a look at your company and don’t be standard or just very good… It wants you to be remarkable and helps you understand how you can do it and why your should do it.

Otaku; is a japanese word for obsession, and everyone has one but they will all be different. I suppose I have one for “black & white” and “cats”. If you can find out if your audience has one for your product you need to move towards them getting them wanting more.

Risk; If you don’t try you’ll never know! Which is one thing my Mum said to me all the time while growing up. By taking a risk you open up opportunities for you, your company and your products/services.

Sneezers; Find out who these people are and make sure they tell everyone about you and what you can do for them. They are the high end word of mouth referrals, better than Networking by far! These are people who are wanting to share you and your product with people to show how you helped them.

I’m also working out what I sneeze about too. Is this something I want to promote? Do I believe in it that much to tell other people about it?

Fantastic book!, which I do and will carry on recommending or should I say “Sneezing” about and will read again in the future. This is one to buy and keep on my shelf…

If you have read it let me know what you thought and which golden nuggets you have taken away from it and if you know what your purple cow is?

Guest Blogger: HR – Benefits of a Social Networking Policy by Danielle Platten

A SOCIAL NETWORKING POLICY: MORE RED TAPE OR A TOOL TO PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS REPUTATION?

Every week there seems to be a new story about employees misusing social media – regardless of industry or role… whether they’re a Premiership footballer, CEO of a software agency or a flight attendant.

The role of social media has blurred the lines between our personal and professional lives and behind each of these stories is a business who’s sadly been damaged by the online conduct of an employee.

With the flight attendant story, Simonetti  reportedly wrote a blog where she posted photos of herself in unbuttoned uniform and leaning over aircraft seats showing parts of her underwear which ultimately resulted in her dismissal.
However this throws up a real problem for employers… would you feel comfortable handling such a situation? Would your managers? How would their colleagues treat them before the investigation was resolved?

You should be aware that Employment Tribunal rulings show employees’ misuse of social media doesn’t always constitute gross misconduct and summary dismissal (not a fair dismissal anyway).

Quote: KOO1410 you will get your policy for £49!

However don’t worry – there are some steps you can take to make sure you’re not at risk of having to deal with these difficult  decisions.

  1. Most importantly you should have a social networking policy
  2. Avoid jargon in your policy – remember managers do not have the time to read endless pages of complicated policies and procedures
  3. Be specific yet draft your policy to cover new technology and forms of social media not yet created
  4. Regularly review your policy
  5. Treat any allegation of breach of policy in a fair and reasonable manner
  6. Good communication is essential to prevent situations that can damage your business reputation so help staff understand the impact their actions can have.

Social media is a great tool for helping businesses grow and through this approach our clients have found they can concentrate on using it to engage with customers and not worry by reducing the risk of damaging incidents happening in the first place.

BLUE are proud to have been Koogar’d…

BLUE Whole Blueberries (aka BLUE Sauces): We are a small fruit farm on the Welsh Shropshire border that produce Blueberry sauces, syrups, salad dressings and drink mixers.

We are a new, small, family run business starting out in a tough economic environment. Progress, costs, getting out there, costs, being visible, costs, design work, costs. Advice is readily available from a variety of sources, both government and private, but few have come close to the quality of advice we have received from Koogar.

@BLUESAUCES Tweet on Friday 12th August: Thought you might be interested. Since your course, www.BLUESauces.com are 7th on google list below BBC… Page 14 before…Many thanks :)

Implementing Koogar’s suggestions have boosted our online presence from near obscurity to the front page of search engines. Sounds great but there is a lot of time involved in getting there when you do not have an unlimited budget to bump up the ranks, but all you need is time.

The old adage of “you get out what you put in” has never rung more true than in this case. The key as I see it is persistence, keep at it, keep visible, keep people interested. Social media and websites are a fabulous business tool, a way to educate and connect with the customer.

BLUE are proud to have been Koogar’d…

Guy came up with the new idea for the Koogar’d T-Shirts. Thanks Guy! And we’re really pleased you have got so much from our Social Media Workshop too. Well done!

You could win your very own “Koogar’d T-shirt” by attending one of our courses. Find out more on www.koogartraining.co.uk

Guest Blogger: PR – Dispelling the Myths by Clare Delve

Have you ever been on the outside of a situation and thought – “how cool is that!” without knowing the full background? I have, but I’d never considered people thinking that way about my career until I became a radio journalist and someone presumed I only worked five minutes an hour because that was when I presented the news!

“Must be such a cushy job that.” they said to my total astonishment.

So I have become very defensive of my craft, particularly when I moved into the world of Public Relations. I guess it sounded oh so very glamorous, a world filled with absolutely fabulous champagne, designer shoes and air kisses “Mwah Mwah daaahling! Must dash, lunch soon yah!”

Hmmm, can’t remember the last time I did that… I’ve done lots of standing in the cold, asking total strangers what their opinions are on strikes, public services and movie stars; and I’ve sat writing press releases at midnight because it’s been important to a client but the champagne? Well OK, maybe once or twice over the years…. if I’m honest.

When people ask me to describe what PR is – which they inevitably do because it’s not like saying you’re a hairdresser or a solicitor – I say it’s basically it’s about the ability to tell a person’s story. It’s not dissimilar to journalism in that way when you get down to the fundamentals, you are giving someone a voice. You can bet that this is the same principle for anyone, whether they’re a big business or just a resident involved in their own community.

Now here’s the crux of it… not everyone is good at telling stories. Picking out the important bits and putting them first, getting another person’s point of view across in such a way that people can relate to it, promoting people or businesses in a positive way… I’m just getting started but being a good communicator is harder than you think.

The way I see it is that you wouldn’t expect the butcher to cut your hair or the baker to do your tax return so why would you expect someone with no experience or training in that area to communicate your key messages about your business?

So think of it this way, not as Public Relations and the mythical Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley world, but as communication, whether about your business, your latest endeavour or project and what it and you can do.

At the end of the day it’s your voice, and only you can make sure that it’s being heard.

Koogar flys to Jersey

Outside my hotel room in JerseyKoogar recently flew over to Jersey to train our new clients.

Over the last three months the Koogar Team have evolved a brand, created a more user friendly website and have now trained the staff within the company on how to use their new website and update it.

Katie Faulker; Director of Excel Recruitment said “The website looks great and its a lot easier to use for the Excel Staff as well as our clients and candidates.

Amendments and updates were made on the fly while in Excel’s offices in St Helier; as the clients asked for them. The truth of a websites functionality is always known when using it for real. Training took place 5 days before GO LIVE, making sure the site was running as it should for the users and the staff members for Monday 20th June.

Here is a photograph from my hotel room.

The pool and weather were being admired from Room 42 while I was tweaking and updating of the website for the next mornings meeting at 9am. Only a few hours before I flew back to the UK. Koogar are International!

We had a catch up meeting to talk about the tweaks and show them to the client making sure she was happy with everything.

I hope to return to Jersey to do more business and to maybe even have a holiday.

Dr.Ivan Misners thoughts on Marketing… (Interview)

On Monday this week I got a fantastic opportunity to interview the founder and chairman of BNI (Business Network International), Dr.Ivan Misner.

He is called the “Father of Modern Networking,” Dr. Misner is one of the world’s leading experts in business networking and referral marketing.

Why?

The reason for the interview was to find out how successful business men and women like Dr.Ivan Misner promote themselves and what they think of Marketing.

I get asked questions everyday about Marketing. For example; What should I do? It is expensive, there’s no point…, I’m not sure what to do…, What do you think I should do to promote the company?… The answer will be different for every business and business owner.

A lot of business owner struggle with marketing not realising that is a necessary activity for all businesses. So, I want to help them in a different way.

How?

I thought the best way to help my clients and other business owners to understand about Marketing is by interviewing people who have been there and done it. I will be interviewing different people in different ways and sharing their thoughts with you.

Where?

This interview took place via Skype, between Liverpool (UK) and California (USA).

You can listen to the the interview below or you can view a transcript of the Interview here in PDF form. The transcript has a few links that Dr.Ivan Misner suggested you took a look at.

It’s not what you know, or who you know, it’s how well you know each other that really counts…

Koogar interviews Dr.Ivan Misner about Marketing by koogarsox

Lets us know what you think and feel free to ask questions!

Koogar interviews Dr.Ivan Misner

Yesterday Koogar interviewed Dr.Ivan Misner to find out what he thinks about Marketing.

At the beginning of 2011, Koogar took a look at the new years marketing plan. One thing I took from last year (2010) and previous years in business is that there are a lot of people in business who are unsure of what marketing is and are also scared to put themselves out there, even though they are in business to make money.

I regularly attend Marketing Seminars to see what others are up to and how they go about promoting themselves as times are changing, marketing is changing and its happening quickly.

I decided to ask people who have been there and done it… I decided at the beginning of 2011 that I’m going to interview a range of successful business owners and ask them “what their take is on Marketing“, to see if they could give us an insight into what has helped them build their empire(s), and also see if they can give us some hints and tips along the way.

The first person I have interviewed is Dr.Ivan Misner who is the founder and chairman of BNI (Business Network International). BNI is the largest networking organisation in the world that help business owners come together and refer each other for business every week. Koogar has been a member in BNI Alpha in Liverpool for over 3 years and thought there was no better place to start.

The interview has been recorded and will be uploaded for you to listen to and will also be transcribed giving you some of the websites and links Dr.Ivan Misner has recommended we take a look at.

If you not currently in BNI and are looking for a new marketing stream for your business, I can obviously recommend it.

Share your stories about BNI and how it has helped you and keep an eye on our website for the full interview.

Social Media for Artists

Last Friday was spent in the company of Liverpool based Artists.

From Photographers, to Jewellery Makers and Painters. Even Digital Visual Artists attended the workshop. The reason why they attended was because they wanted to learn more about selling their work, bring more awareness to what they do and understand which platform they should be on.

Dot Art LogoIt was a pleasure to train these Artists for Dot Art. It took me back to when I was in College; life drawing, learning about photography, etching, soldering in metal workshop and Art History.

Love it and every now and again during the workshop I wished I was back in college; getting my hands covered in paint, or glue from making something for a week long brief from our tutors…

Being creative in business is for everyone, not just for artists or designers. As creatives and business owners we need to work out how to do things differently compared to other companies and competitors within our industries.

At Koogar HQ we are creating all the time; for ourselves and our clients, which is actually one of Koogars mission statements.

Koogar will be creatively producing:

  • Products
  • For our clients
  • People

Delivering this workshop ticked this box. We have 4 mission statements and whatever we do we make sure 3 out of 4 are ticked! By having these statements helps us be the best we can be for ourselves and the people we work with.

I have a personal project which I am one step closer to with the help from Lucy (owner of Dot Art). When the project starts it will be photographed and filmed along the way.

I would like to thank Dot Art for giving us the opportunity to work with their Artists and help them sell their Art in the latest way using technology and Social Media. It has inspired me to be even more creative, take more time over work and think about what we are putting out there for our clients.

When was the last time you were creative in business?

Off the radar…

When we train people/businesses in Social Media we recommend certain things to them to make sure they achieve the maximum potential with which ever platform they are using.

We have been off the radar a little due to the amount of work we currently have on and the bookings we are getting in for Social Media Training (x2 Full SM Days and x2 Hands-on Training Sessions in June), which means we haven’t blogged for a while. So I am sorry for that.

We have also been working on our own Marketing Plan/Strategy and have a new product that is currently in Beta. This product not only tells you;

  • what marketing you need to do during a year but also
  • how much you could be earning every month and most importantly
  • who your target audience is

We have hand picked 6 businesses to be our pilots for this new product before its full release but we are confident that it works, it will get you more business, keep you focused on what you have to do and help you to get there.

Sometimes you need to take a step back and work on your business not too much into it. You’ll be seeing our new marketing roll out over the next month. When you see something new, let us know what you think!

This week alone we have learnt a lot about what we need to do to achieve our monthly and yearly objectives.

Have you got a plan?
